This study aimed to measure alterations of chemical elements’ (67) levels in the aqueous humor of patients undergoing cataract surgery. The pilot study included 115 patients, (age 74 ± 7.27, female 64.35%, male 35.65%). The aqueous levels of elements were measured by the use of the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), quality controlled with certified standards. The classification of elements based on their concentration was achieved by hierarchical cluster analysis. This is the first screening study that quantifies over 60 elements which are present in the fluid from the...

AbstractPurposeTo determine the efficacy of cataract surgery alone and combined with two minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedures (phaco-ELT and phaco-aiT).MethodsData was collected from 12/2007 to 02/2012 in this retrospective, non-randomized, comparative single surgery center study. Reduction in IOP and hypotensive medication (AGD), change in visual acuity, success rates, and complications were computed by comparing preoperative data with data at 1  year postoperatively.ResultsA total of 245 eyes of 245 subjects were included. Study eyes underwent phaco alone (38 eye) or combined phaco-ELT (105 eye) and...

ConclusionEcological and socio-economical determinants play critical role in the magnitude and causes of blindness and visual impairment in Saudi Arabia. Significant data gaps obscure monitoring and evaluation of the eye health. Eye health indicators should be integrated into the national health information system for dynamic monitoring and evaluation.
