PlantAFP: a curated database of plant-origin antifungal peptides.

PlantAFP: a curated database of plant-origin antifungal peptides. Amino Acids. 2019 Oct 14;: Authors: Tyagi A, Pankaj V, Singh S, Roy S, Semwal M, Shasany AK, Sharma A Abstract Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) are a severe problem caused by fungi in human and plant species across the world. They pose a worldwide threat to food security as well as human health. Fungal infections are increasing now day by day worldwide, and the current antimycotic drugs are not effective due to the emergence of resistant strains. Therefore, it is an urgent need for the finding of new plant-origin antifungal peptides (PhytoAFPs). Huge numbers of peptides were extracted from different plant species which play a protective role against fungal infection. Hundreds of plant-origin peptides with antifungal activity have already been reported. So there is a requirement of a dedicated platform which systematically catalogs plant-origin peptides along with their antifungal properties. PlantAFP database is a resource of experimentally verified plant-origin antifungal peptides, collected from research articles, patents, and public databases. The current release of PlantAFP database contains 2585 peptide entries among which 510 are unique peptides. Each entry provides comprehensive information of a peptide that includes its peptide sequence, peptide name, peptide class, length of the peptide, molecular mass, antifungal activity, and origin of peptides. Besides this primary informati...

This article summarizes the main epidemiological characteristics of tinea gladiatorum, new outbreaks that have been presented over the years, and theories about their transmission, diagnosis, treatment, and prophylactic measures.Recent FindingsDespite the controversy, recent studies defined that the transmission of tinea gladiatorum is by skin-to-skin contact and through fomites. Once the infection is acquired, it is difficult to control due to its rapid dissemination to other wrestlers, so great importance has been taken to prevention.SummaryDespite dermatophytosis still being considered as one of the major public health ...

AbstractPurpose of the ReviewCandida albicans vulvovaginitis is one of the most frequent symptomatic infections in women and its incidence increases in reproductive age and pregnancy. Currently there are more specific and sensitive tests to identifyCandida species that are resistant to antifungal agents, such as PCR and MALDI TOF MS, in order to improve prognosis.Recent FindingsThe genusCandida is part of the microbiota in humans; however, many species can become pathogenic. Vulvovaginitis caused by non-albicansCandida are becoming very important due to their high levels of antifungal resistance, which makes treatment diff...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewFungal infections account for significant morbidity and mortality in HIV-infected children particularly in developing countries where there is lack of skilled personnel and infrastructure to make the appropriate diagnosis. This is further compounded by poor availability and accessibility of the antifungals needed to treat these infections. The purpose of this review is to highlight the paucity of data on AIDS-related mycoses in the paediatric age group and make appropriate recommendations to address challenges associated with mycoses in this population.Recent FindingsThese infections are categorise...

Conclusion: Our results demonstrated clinical epidemiology of various Candida species from cutaneous candidiasis distributed in new molecular types with increasing importance of drug resistant of non-albicans Candida species. Our results showed that drug susceptibility and genetic variability of Candida species may be attributed to their clinical features and source of isolation. PMID: 31719957 [PubMed]

P, Sanguinetti M Abstract The introduction of non-culture-based diagnostic techniques is revolutionizing the world of microbiological diagnosis and infection assessment. Fungi are no exception, and the introduction of biomarkers has opened up enormous expectations for better management of these entities. Biomarkers are diverse, their targets are also diverse and their evaluation has been done preferably in an individualized use and with deficient designs. Less is known about the value of the combined use of biomarkers and the impact of the negativity of two or more biomarkers on antifungal treatment decisions has...

(American Phytopathological Society) A recent Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions article studies chitin-binding proteins from a soilborne fungus (Verticillium nonalfalfae) that causes vascular wilt in plants. This fungus binds a particular protein (VnaChtBP) to chitin in order to abolish the host plant's chitin-triggered burst of reactive oxygen species and shield the fungus from being digested by the plant.
