How to investigate: Pre-clinical rheumatoid arthritis

Publication date: Available online 15 October 2019Source: Best Practice &Research Clinical RheumatologyAuthor(s): Patrícia Martins, João Eurico FonsecaAbstractMultiple studies have shown that there is a pre-clinical period preceding the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). During this period, complex interactions between the environmental and genetic causes occur, and the expression “preclinical RA” has been proposed to define it. Early treatment intervention is associated with less joint damage and has an increased possibility of achieving remission. In this review, we provide an overview of the preclinical phases of RA, new immunological and imaging biomarkers, and the clinical features, and the management of individuals at-risk of developing RA.

Collagen vascular disease, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and scleroderma (SSc), all have auto-antibodies in their pathogenesis though the effect after heart transplantation is not known. Our aim was to assess the impact of collagen vascular disease on the risk of post-transplant donor specific antibodies (DSA), rejection, and cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV).

This article discusses the most common tumor and tumor-like lesions arising at the shoulder. Osseous tumors of the shoulder rank second in incidence to those at the knee joint and include benign osteochondromas and myeloma or primary malignant lesions, such as osteosarcoma or chondrosarcomas. Soft tissue tumors are overwhelmingly benign, with lipomas predominating, although malignant lesions, such as liposarcomas, can occur. Numerous tumor-like lesions may arise from the joints or bursae, due to either underlying arthropathy and synovitis (eg, rheumatoid arthritis and amyloid) or related to conditions, including tenosynovi...

Authors: Chen Y, Xu W, Yang H, Shao M, Xu S, Deng J, Gao X, Liu H, Shuai Z, Xu S, Pan F Abstract Present studies on serum hepcidin levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are inconsistent. We aimed to synthetically evaluate the relationship between hepcidin and RA, and the correlation of serum hepcidin levels and RA disease activity as well as anemia associated with RA. Multiple electronic databases were searched. Pooled standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) and correlation coefficients between hepcidin levels and rheumatoid factor (RF), disease activity for 28 joints (DAS28), a...
