Adolescent Sexual Health: “Partners” in Prevention

Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. Expedited partner therapy is the practice of prescribing antibiotic therapy to the sexual partner(s) of a patient infected with a sexually transmitted infection, without an evaluation by a provider. Primary care providers often encourage partner notification, but research suggests that is not sufficient in ensuring successful partner treatment or reducing patient reinfection. All primary care providers must be comfortable prescribing expedited partner therapy to at-risk populations.
