Non-invasive vascular assessment in people with type 2 diabetes: Diagnostic performance of Plethysmographic-and-Doppler derived ankle brachial index, toe brachial index, and pulse volume wave analysis for detection of peripheral arterial disease

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a highly prevalent, yet underdiagnosed, condition [1]. Although frequently asymptomatic, it is a leading cause of leg pain, claudication, ulceration, gangrene, and even amputation. On the other hand, patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) are more likely to develop PAD than do the non-diabetic subjects. Furthermore, they are affected by more severe and extensive form of the disease that tends to involve more distal arteries, progress more quickly, and also it is more likely to lead to ischemic ulceration and amputation [2].

He showed symptoms of generalized lipodystrophy around onset of puberty. His body mass index was 11.9 kg/m2, and he had a short stature, birdlike facies, dental crowding due to micrognathia, partial graying and loss of hair, and a high-pitched voice, all of which are typical features o...

ElshazlyAbstractPeroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPAR-γ) agonist, pioglitazone, is used clinically to improve the glycemic state in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus. Independent of its blood glucose-lowering properties, pioglitazone ameliorates different cardiovascular disorders. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of pioglitazone on cardiovascular complications of N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME)-induced hypertensi...

High levels of these cytokines increase the synthesis of suppressors of cytokines (SOCS), which at high levels inhibit insulin signalling leading to insulin resistance. The effects of tofacitinib and aspirin on the degree of in...

Materials and Method; the rats were randomly allocated into nine different experimental groups. Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin (15mg/kg) for 6 days. Rats having blood glucose level above 250mg/dl w...

Publication date: Available online 13 November 2019Source: PeptidesAuthor(s): Nigel Irwin, Victor A. Gault, Finbarr P.M. O’Harte, Peter R. FlattAbstractGastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) is a 42 amino acid hormone secreted from intestinal K-cells in response to nutrient ingestion. Despite a recognised physiological role for GIP as an insulin secretagogue to control postprandial blood glucose levels, growing evidence reveals important actions of GIP on adipocytes and promotion of fat deposition in tissues. As such, blockade of GIP receptor (GIPR) action has been proposed as a means to counter insulin resistance, and...

ConclusionThe acute toxicity associated with oral selenium ingestion and the blood and urinary levels of selenium in different cases of poisonings were reviewed. Mortality is a risk of acute selenium poisoning. Concentrations of selenium in blood and urine samples in non-fatal cases are close to those observed in fatal cases.

Authors: Morris AL, Colbourne T, Kirkpatrick I, Banerji V Abstract Nontraumatic chylous pleural effusions (chylothorax) and pericardial effusions (chylopericardium) are rare. They can, however, accompany intrathoracic malignancies and, most commonly, lymphomas. An association of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (cll) with chylopericardium has rarely been reported. A 68-year-old woman with cll, previously treated with single-agent fludarabine in the community, developed pleuritic chest pain and a new pericardial effusion. Computed tomography (ct) imaging of her chest revealed a large pericardial effusion with progressiv...

ConclusionsPenetrating trauma victims are at increased risk of returning to the ED, most often because of wound or pain issues. Recognizing these factors allows for targeted interventions to decrease ED resource utilization.
