Maximum standardized uptake value from quantitative bone single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography in differentiating metastatic and degenerative joint disease of the spine in prostate cancer patients

AbstractObjectiveQualitative interpretation in bone scan is often complicated by the presence of degenerative joint disease (DJD), especially in the elderly patient. The aim of this study is to compare objectively99mTc-MDP tracer uptake between DJD and osseous metastases of the spine using semi-quantitative assessment with SPECT SUV.MethodsBone scan with SPECT/CT using99mTc-MDP was performed in 34 patients diagnosed with prostate carcinoma. SPECT/CT was performed based on our institutional standard guidelines. SUVmax based on body weight in 238 normal vertebrae visualized on SPECT/CT was quantified as baseline. A total of 211 lesions in the spine were identified on bone scan. Lesions were characterized into DJD or bone metastases based on its morphology on low-dose CT. Semi-quantitative evaluation using SUVmax was then performed on 89 DJD and 122 metastatic bone lesions. As most of the bone lesions were small in volume, the effect of partial volume effect (PVE) on SUVmax was also assessed. The corrected SUVmax values were obtained based on the recovery coefficient (RC) method.ResultsThe mean SUVmax for normal vertebrae was 7.08  ± 1.97, 12.59 ± 9.01 for DJD and 36.64 ± 24.84 for bone metastases. The SUVmax of bone metastases was significantly greater than DJD (p value

CONCLUSIONS.—: Knowledge of the reasons for histopathologic false-negative diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the prostate is an important component in the diagnostic assessment of prostate tissue sections. Diagnostic awareness of the histomorphologic presentations of small (minimal) adenocarcinoma; deceptively benign appearing variants including atrophic, foamy gland, microcystic, and pseudohyperplastic variants; single cell carcinoma; and treatment effects is critical for establishment of a definitive diagnosis of adenocarcinoma and the prevention of false-negative diagnoses of prostate cancer. Malignant mesothelioma has become the latest deadly cancer linked directly to the rescue, recovery and cleanup efforts following the 9/11 terrorist attack on New York City in 2001. The long-running threat has come to fruition. Eighteen years after Manhattan was engulfed in the asbestos-laced, toxic cloud of dust — caused primarily by the World Trade Center destruction — the first death from pleural mesothelioma attributed to 9/11 has been recorded. Nick Ursta, 52, from the southwestern part of Pennsylvania, died after a year-long battle with the rare cancer. Ursta, a construction worker and fireman by trade, w...

Authors: Hoffmann MA, Buchholz HG, Wieler HJ, Höfner T, Müller-Hübenthal J, Trampert L, Schreckenberger M Abstract Background: The aim of the present study is to analyze the efficacy of 68Gallium (Ga)-PSMA-11 PET/CT for detecting and localizing recurrent prostate carcinoma (PC) in patients with different prostate-specific antigen (PSA), PSA velocity (PSAvel) and doubling time (PSAdt). Results: The PR of 68Ga-PSMA-11 PET/CT showed a positive relationship with PSA levels. Even at restaging PSA-values (PSAV) of lower than 0.2 ng/ml, PR was 41%. For PSAV of 0.2-

Abstract Intraductal carcinoma of the prostate (IDC-P) is an aggressive pathological pattern of prostate cancer (PCa). We investigated the association of IDC-P in prostate biopsy (PBx) with several pathological features after radical prostatectomy (RP) and its prognostic value in high-risk PCa. A total of 418 patients with high-risk PCa after RP were included in this study. IDC-P and its architectural patterns were identified according to the 2016 World Health Organization Classification. Chi-squared test and logistic regression were used to investigate the correlation between IDC-P and post-RP pathological featur...

Authors: Kulasinghe A, Hughes BGM, Kenny L, Punyadeera C Abstract Introduction: Local and distant metastatic disease occurs in approximately half of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients, representing an ongoing cause for treatment failure. Circulating tumour cells (CTCs) are transient cancer cells which have the capacity to metastasise to distant sites such as the lungs and liver in HNSCC. When metastatic disease is radiographically evident, the patient prognosis is often poor. Therefore, methodologies to assess micrometastatic disease are needed to (1) identify patients likely to develop metastat...

In this study, we found that miR-452 was highly expressed in both tumor tissue and gastric cancer cells, and could directly target the cancer suppressor gene EPB41L3 3′-UTR. miR-452 significantly promoted the proliferation, migration and the S-phase arrest of gastric cancer cells, but EPB41L3 as a downstream target gene of miR-452 reversed such promoting effect. While down-regulation of miR-452 expression significantly inhibited the malignant biological behavior of gastric cancer cells, but this inhibitory effect was reversed by EPB41L3 siRNA. In addition, miR-452 in the gastric cancer xenograft model in nude mice co...
