Endoscopy referral variation blamed for poor oesophageal and gastric cancer outcomes

Research from the department of gastroenterology at the University of Liverpool has found that there is a wide variation in rates of elective upper gastrointestinal endoscopy between GP practices across England. The team studied 22,488 new cases of oesophageal and gastric cancer from 6,513 general practices. Their research showed that average referral rates for endoscopy varied by 250%.
