Vagal Things and Guitar Strings: The Evolution of Ulcer Surgery and the Electric Blues from Chicago ’s South Side

The interweaving of surgery and music was a central theme of the invited lectures at the 2019 annual meeting of the Midwest Surgical Association, most notably in Dr Nicholas Zyromski ’s Presidential Address. I am grateful for Dr Zyromski’s invitation to deliver this year’s William H. Harridge Lecture on the history of Chicago’s South Side, a subject of increasing personal interest since I assumed my current position as Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago in 2006. Nick and I share a love of Americana, roots, and blues music (we are both amateur guitarists and songwriters).
