Accuracy and clinical implications of pre-operative breast core needle biopsy diagnoses of fibroepithelial neoplasms and sarcomatoid carcinomas

ConclusionsA pre-operative core biopsy diagnosis of “malignant spindle cell neoplasm” separates MP and SC from BLP, BP, and FA. However, MP and SC can have overlapping features on core biopsy. Thus, one must be careful not to overcall SC on core biopsy, as patients diagnosed with SC may receive neoadjuvant therapy. A core biopsy diagnosis of “p hyllodes tumor” is specific for PT and can guide treatment planning of a wide local excision.

Rationale: Breast metastasis from serous borderline tumor with micro-invasive carcinoma of ovary is a very rare condition. The breast lump as the only clinical presentation is rarely seen in ovarian carcinoma, which may lead to be misdiagnosed, and the mechanism of breast metastasis from ovarian tumors in early stage still needs to be explored. Differentiation from primary breast cancer and extramammary malignancy is crucial because the treatment and prognosis are significantly different. Patient concerns: A 33-year-old female presented with a painless, movable, 1.0 × 1.0 cm lump in the upper outer quadran...

Health-Related Complications of Acromegaly—Risk of Malignant Neoplasms Marek Ruchala*† and Kosma Wolinski† Department of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Internal Medicine, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poznań, Poland The issue of increased risk of benign and malignant neoplasms in patients with acromegaly remains the topic of debate from many years and was addressed by numerous studies. Many of them have shown increase in the cancer incidence. Among particular types of malignancies, thyroid, colorectal, and breast cancer are most commonly indicated as associated with acromegaly. Single ...

Conclusion: The texture analysis for breast DCE-MRI proposed in this study demonstrated potential utility in HER2 2+ status discrimination. Background Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is an orphan tyrosine kinase receptor. It is reported that HER2 is overexpressed in 15–20% of breast cancers. Overexpression of HER2 in breast cancer correlates with shortened disease-free survival. Compared with HER2-negative patients, patients with HER2-positive breast cancers have a poor prognosis, a high probability of lymph node metastasis and a high risk of recurrence (1–3). However, previous studies h...

Conclusion: These new findings indicated that the CCL2/CCR2 axis promoted the progression of SACC cells via recruiting and reprogramming TAMs. Targeting TAMs by blocking the CCL2/CCR2 axis might be a prospective strategy for SACC therapy. Introduction Salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed salivary gland malignancies, accounting for about 10% of all salivary gland neoplasms (1, 2). The typical characteristics of SACC include the recurrent growth, aggressive invasion, hematogenous metastasis, and chemotherapy refractory (2–4). Despite the great efforts paid in the treatm...

Conclusions In summary, βV-tubulin was localized to secretory cells of the distal FTE and its expression varied according to the clinical diagnosis. The frequency of these cells and thus expression of βV-tubulin were dramatically enriched in tissue obtained from BRCA mutant cases, which also exhibited pronounced histologic atypia indicative of early predysplastic aberrations. Furthermore, elevated expression of βV-tubulin correlated with poor differentiation status in serous ovarian neoplasms.

HER-2 (also known as HER-2/neu) is a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor family. The amplification of oncogene HER-2 is presented in 20 to 30% of breast cancers and results in an increase of the protein expression. HER-2 over expression has also been shown to correlate with poor prognosis. It is associated with poorly differentiated high grade tumors with lymph node involvement, greater risk of recurrence and relative resistance to some types of chemotherapy. The receptor is however a target for treatment with anti HER-2 antibody trastuzumab (Herceptin). Immunohistochemistry analysis for HER 2 scoring is s...

We present a brief review of possible mechanisms to account for this unusual presentation and speculate that the most likely one is exfoliation of fallopian tube epithelial cells into the peritoneal cavity, which then gain access to lymphatics resulting in cells implanting in the brain and subsequently progressing to an atypical proliferative (borderline) serous tumor.

ConclusionsIn early-stage TNBC, nodal involvement, TILs, and receipt of adjuvant chemotherapy were independently associated with IDFS and OS. In systemically untreated TNBC, TILs remained prognostic and the risk of recurrence or death was substantial, even for T1N0 disease.

Abstract Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 gene- (HER2-) targeted therapy for breast cancer relies primarily on HER2 overexpression established by immunohistochemistry (IHC) with borderline cases being further tested for amplification by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Manual interpretation of HER2 FISH is based on a limited number of cells and rather complex definitions of equivocal, polysomic, and genetically heterogeneous (GH) cases. Image analysis (IA) can extract high-capacity data and potentially improve HER2 testing in borderline cases. We investigated statistically derived indicators of H...
