Micro-CT imaging analysis for the effects of ibandronate and eldecalcitol on secondary osteoporosis and arthritis in adjuvant-induced arthritis rats.

Micro-CT imaging analysis for the effects of ibandronate and eldecalcitol on secondary osteoporosis and arthritis in adjuvant-induced arthritis rats. Biomed Res. 2019;40(5):197-205 Authors: Ono Y, Miyakoshi N, Kasukawa Y, Imai Y, Nagasawa H, Tsuchie H, Akagawa M, Nagahata I, Yuasa Y, Sato C, Kawatani M, Shimada Y Abstract We investigated the effects of ibandronate, a bisphosphonate; eldecalcitol, an active vitamin D3 analogue; and combination treatment with both agents on secondary osteoporosis and arthritis using rats with adjuvant-induced arthritis. Arthritis was induced in 8-week-old male Lewis rats. Rats were randomized into four treatment groups and an untreated normal control group: ibandronate, eldecalcitol, ibandronate + eldecalcitol, vehicle, and control. Paw thickness was measured to evaluate arthritis. Joint destruction was evaluated histomorphometrically by the ankle joint stained with Fast Green and safranin O. The femur and lumbar spine were scanned using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and the distal femur was scanned using micro-computed tomography for bone mineral density (BMD) and trabecular microstructural evaluations. Ibandronate and/or eldecalcitol increased BMD in both the lumbar vertebrae and femur and improved several microstructural parameters (bone volume/total volume, structure model index, trabecular number, and trabecular separation of the distal femur). In addition, there was an additive effect of combination treatment com...

Comorbidity is the presence of one or more additional conditions co-occurring with a primary condition. In this episode, host schizophrenic Rachel Star Withers with her cohost Gabe Howard will be discussing comorbidity with schizophrenia. Comorbidity is associated with worse health outcomes, more complex clinical management and increased health care costs. Occupational therapist and host of the podcast Occupied, Brock Cook, will be joining us to discuss ways that he works with people with schizophrenia to manage multiple health issues.  Highlights from “Comorbidity with Schizophrenia” Episode [01:28] What ...

Abstract Natural products have been investigated as potential candidates of novel therapeutics and play a crucial role in advanced medicinal drugs. Natural resources, including local medicinal plants (especially folk medicinal plants), animals, bacteria, and fungi have been used for more than a century, and are precious gifts from nature, providing potential medicines with high safety. Osteoclast-related diseases, such as osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Paget's disease, osteoclastoma, and periprosthetic osteolysis, are currently the most common reasons for bone inflammation, pain and fractures, resulting in lo...

ConclusionsPsA patients had a higher burden of bone damages (erosions and enthesiophytes) and trabecular bone loss compared with healthy control at the MCH. Inflammation contributed to the deterioration in trabecular microstructure in these patients.

ConclusionsThere is a need for deeper understanding of the impact of relative socioeconomic disadvantage on health (particularly physical activity and obesity) in rural settings and the development of accessible and culturally appropriate interventions to address rural cancer survivors ’ specific needs and risk factors.

AbstractSummaryWe analyzed volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and bone microstructure using HR-pQCT in subjects with normouricemia (NU) and subjects with hyperuricemia (HU) with and without psoriasis (PSO). HU was associated with higher cortical vBMD and thickness. Differences in average and trabecular vBMD were found between patients with PSO  + HU and NU.IntroductionHyperuricemia (HU) and gout are co-conditions of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Current data suggest a positive association between HU and areal bone mineral density (BMD) and a negative influence of psoriasis on local bone, even in the ...

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is a metabolic bone disease characterized by decreased bone density and strength due to the imbalance between osteogenesis and osteoclastogenesis. Postmenopausal estrogen withdrawal increases proinflammatory cytokines and increases the serum level of Receptor activator of NF-kB ligand (RANKL)/Osteoprotegerin (OPG), which then leads to the overactivation of osteoclastogenesis. Tetrandrine, a bis-benzylisoquinoline alkaloid, has been widely used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis clinically in China. Here, we demonstrate that tetrandrine significantly prevented ovariectomy-induced bon...

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to compare incidence of degenerative scoliosis (DS) in patients who diagnosed lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) with or without rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and identify the risk factors of DS severity in RA patients. 61 LSS patients with RA (RA group) and 87 demographic-matched LSS patients without RA (NoRA group) from January 2013 to April 2018 were enrolled. The extracted information includes RA-related parameters such as Steinbrocker classification, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and DS-related information such as Cobb angle, apical vertebra, along with osteoporosis and hi...

Conclusion A great deal of progress is being made in the matter of treating aging: in advocacy, in funding, in the research and development. It can never be enough, and it can never be fast enough, given the enormous cost in suffering and lost lives. The longevity industry is really only just getting started in the grand scheme of things: it looks vast to those of us who followed the slow, halting progress in aging research that was the state of things a decade or two ago. But it is still tiny compared to the rest of the medical industry, and it remains the case that there is a great deal of work yet to be done at all...
