Elevated serum ceramides are linked with obesity-associated gut dysbiosis and impaired glucose metabolism

ConclusionThis study identifies an association between gut microbiota richness, ceramides, and diabetes risk in overweight/obese humans, and suggests that the gut microbiota may contribute to dysregulation of lipid metabolism in metabolic disorders.

The objective of this study is the generation of descriptive data on the mode of delivery and on maternal and foetal complications in the case of foetal macrosomia. The causes and consequences of foetal macrosomia as well as the rate of shoulder dystocia are examined in relation to the severity of the macrosomia. Patients The study investigated all singleton births ≥ 37 + 0 weeks of pregnancy with a birth weight ≥ 4000 g at the Charité University Medicine Berlin (Campus Mitte 2001 - 2017, Campus Virchow Klinikum 2014 - 2017). Results 2277 consecutive newborns (birth w...

Authors: Weschenfelder F, Lehmann T, Schleussner E, Groten T Abstract Introduction The birth of a large for gestational age (LGA) infant is a significant risk factor for birth complications and maternal morbidity and an even higher risk factor for offspring obesity, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease in later life. Relevant factors affecting the risk of delivering an LGA infant are maternal pre-gravid obesity, excessive gestational weight gain exceeding the recommendations of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and diabetes in pregnancy. We aimed to determine what matters most in terms of the risk of fetal o...

Malik, Elaine Grant, Joshua RhodenizerAbstractThe isolated talonavicular joint arthrodesis can be beneficial to correct midfoot deformities involving the talonavicular joint, including collapsing pes planovalgus. Studies show that isolated talonavicular arthrodesis has a higher nonunion rate because of micromotion; thus, other procedures should be used in conjunction with it. We sought to determine if adding an adjunctive medial calcaneal displacement osteotomy helps to reduce the ground reactive force and, the...

ConclusionsThe fast-food and refined grains/poultry dietary patterns were associated with high prevalence of CVD risk factors among Kuwaiti adults. The current findings underscore the need for prospective studies to further explore dietary pattern and CVD risk factor relationships among at-risk Kuwait adults.

Authors: Wu X, Wang Z Abstract Hypertension is an important global health concern. The relationship between hypertension and socioeconomic status (SES) has been extensively studied. However, the role of SES in hypertension is still controversial, and this kind of study is sorely lacking among Chinese middle-aged and elderly individuals. The data of this study come from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey (CHARLS) released in May 2017. A total of 21,126 people from all around China, with ages older than 45 years, were enrolled in the questionnaire survey. Hypertension was determined according to the ...

Conclusions: An imbalance in oxidation-reduction processes accompanies obesity. Moreover, inflammatory cytokines and atherosclerotic complications are involved in the obesity process. The obtained results suggest that the studied parameters may be independent prognostic markers preceding the development of cardiovascular and metabolic complications in people afflicted with type II obesity. Authors: Nikolajczyk BS, Dawson DR Abstract New strategies are critically needed to counter uncontrolled periodontal infection and inflammation in obesity-associated type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, mechanisms that explain the relationship between periodontitis (PD) and T2D remain poorly understood. Several lines of evidence indicate that destructive immune responses potentiate periodontitis (PD) in T2D. B cells are abundant in periodontal lesions, and our data show that B cells are required for PD in obese/insulin resistant but not lean/normoglycemic mice. In mice and in people, T2D-primed B cells supported Th17 cy...

Background: Resistin, a cysteine-rich polypeptide encoded by the RETN gene, which plays an important role in many mechanisms in rodent studies, including lipid metabolism, inflammation and insulin resistance. Nevertheless, the relationship between resistin and insulin resistance in humans is under debate. The present study was designed to clarify the correlation between resistin and insulin resistance. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library until March 3, 2019 with the keywords “resistin” and “insulin resistance.” Funnel plots and Egger's test ...
