Management of colon cancer at a tertiary referral center in India - Patterns of presentation, treatment, and survival outcomes

CONCLUSION: Indian patients with colon cancer, at a tertiary referral center, tend to present at more advanced stages of the disease as compared to the West. However, curative treatment with surgery and chemotherapy offers similar survival outcomes when compared stage for stage.

Rationale: The brain, liver, adrenal glands, and bone are the most common sites of metastatic disease in patients with lung cancer. Symptomatic gastrointestinal metastases are rare. In the present report, we describe a rare case of a patient with intestinal obstruction due to solitary colonic metastasis from primary lung adenocarcinoma, wherein the intestinal obstruction was the first symptom of lung cancer. Patient concerns: A 74-year-old man was admitted to the emergency room with abdominal pain and vomiting, and abdominal computed tomography (CT) indicated obstruction of the ascending colon due to a huge mass. Dia...

Conclusion: Mucinous CRC was predominantly located in the right hemicolon; it was diagnosed at more advanced stages and occurred with preponderance in women. A higher rate of G3/4 grading was observed at diagnosis (allp #x3c; 0.001). An association of mucinous CRC with younger age at initial diagnosis, previously reported by other groups, could not be confirmed. Patients with mucinous stage IV colon cancer demonstrated poorer survival (p = 0.006). In contrast, no differences in survival were observed for specific stages I –III colon cancer. Stage-dependent analysis of rectal cancer stages I–IV also showed no di...

ConclusionsColonic metastasis from esophageal SCC is rare, and associated with poor prognosis. There are no definite features in terms of location, histological differentiation etc. that contribute to colonic metastasis from primary esophageal SCC. The goal of treatment is palliative and data from our and other case reports support the use of chemotherapy and radiation for symptom improvement and disease control.

We report a patient with colonic adenocarcinoma who presented with visual disorder in her right eye and scalp pain as her initial symptoms. Contrast-enhance orbital magnetic resonance imaging with fat suppression revealed an infrabulbar mass, and skin biopsy of the posterior parietal scalp confirmed adenocarcinoma. These symptoms were diagnosed as being caused by choroidal and skin metastases of colonic adenocarcinoma. We started palliative chemotherapy with oral capecitabine (1000 mg/m(2), twice a day, on days 1-14) every 3 wk, which was effective at shrinking the brain masses and improving the visual disorder. This is th...

Conclusion: The combined effect of Cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor and Cholecystokinin-2 Receptor antagonists was calculated using Chaou Tatlay method. A combination index was calculated. As a class NSAIDs possess analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, and there is persuasive evidence that COX-2 inhibitor suppress cancer cell proliferation owing to their role in apoptosis, compelling evidence suggest that COX-2 over-expression promotes whereas COX-2 inhibition prevents tumor initiation and promotions. NSAIDs and COX-2 selective inhibitors may have different effects on cancer may be stage dependent therefore a better underst...

Conclusion: Patients suffering from metastatic colorectal cancer may benefit from multidisciplinary treatment with secondary metastatic liver resection after downsizing by palliative second-line treatment. In individual cases, patients may even have a curative treatment option, provided that close interdisciplinary collaboration exists.Case Rep Oncol 2016;9:379-386

This study was conducted in all participating commission on cancer (CoC)-accredited facilities. PATIENTS: The 2003–2006 National Cancer Data Base was reviewed to identify patients with stage IV adenocarcinoma of the colon or rectum who underwent palliative treatment without curative intent, either in the form of surgical resection of the primary tumor without metastasectomy consisting of a colectomy or rectal resection with or without chemotherapy and/or radiation or chemotherapy and/or radiation alone. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Groups were compared for baseline characteristics. Overall survival was compared using Kap...

Conclusion: The combined effect of Cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor and Cholecystokinin-2 Receptor antagonists was calculated. The results has indicated that the combination therapy of COX-2 selective inhibitors may be the potential chemotherapeutic strategy for cancer prevention. In the present study, human pancreatic cancer cell lines, in which the CCK-2 receptor and COX-2 were expressed, was applied to examine whether blockade of the CCK-2 receptor and COX-2 exerts synergistic anti-tumor effects on human pancreatic cancer in vitro. In conclusion, both Etoricoxib and YM-022 had growth inhibitory and apoptosis inductive effects o...
