Trauma Induces Interleukin-17A Expression on Th17 Cells and CD4+ Regulatory T Cells as Well as Platelet Dysfunction

Conclusion: This is the first clinical trial to phenotype the immune response following trauma, focusing on platelets, and the adaptive immune response. We discovered a novel increased IL-17A expression on Th17 cells and on CD4+ Tregs following trauma and describe the kinetics of the immune response. The IL-17A response on CD4+ Tregs challenges the ascribed role of CD4+ Tregs to be solely counter inflammatory in this setting. Furthermore, despite a rising number of platelets, ROTEM analysis shows post-traumatic platelet dysfunction. Subgroup analysis revealed gender, age, and trauma severity as influencing factors for several of the analyzed parameters.

PietrzakAbstractConverging evidence suggests that veterans with co-occurring PTSD/MDD represent a high-risk group for poor mental health compared to those with PTSD alone. To date, however, little is known about the specific factors that may increase vulnerability for and help buffer risk for comorbid PTSD/MDD. The purpose of this study was to provide a population-based characterization of sociodemographic, risk, and protective variables associated with comorbid PTSD/MD...

DrewAbstractEvery day we are bombarded by stimuli that must be assessed for their potential for harm or benefit. Once a stimulus is learned to predict harm, it can elicit fear responses. Such learning can last a lifetime but is not always beneficial for an organism. For an organism to thrive in its environment, it must know when to engage in defensive, avoidance behaviors and when to engage in non-defensive, approach behaviors. Fear should be suppressed i...

While recreational marijuana is legal in 11 states as of November 2019, more states gravitating toward legalizing the recreational use of the substance, and 33 states allowing medical marijuana, there’s apparently no stopping this trend. Cannabis, in the form of marijuana, hemp, and cannabidiol (CBD)  is being used for pain relief, to alleviate stress, cope with anxiety, and a number of other mental health disorders and addictions. Yet, there’s a dearth of clinical studies that have been conducted on the overall effects on a user’s health. Clearly, as Crain’s Detroit Business points out, more ...

A busy day at UNISON’s LGBT+ conference saw delegates discuss a number of major issues. Mental health was high on the agenda, with Alan Williams for the union’s North West LGBT group saying that there was a “concerningly high rate of suicide attempts by LGBT+ members” and called for more training for reps on the issues. Hannah Stephenson urged delegates to return to their branches and ask their employers for mental ill health training, while a speaker from the North West talked of how “one person with the right information can make all the difference”. She said that research suggests tha...
