Publication date: October 2019Source: Journal of Comparative Pathology, Volume 172Author(s): P. Wohlsein, H. Seibel, A. Beineke, W. Baumgärtner, U. SiebertSummaryHearing represents the major sense in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) and impairment of hearing has a great impact on the survival of these animals. In this communication, some anatomical and histological aspects of the tympanoperiotic complex of harbour porpoises are presented. In addition, the ears of 21 incidentally bycaught or stranded freshly dead harbour porpoises of different age groups and sex were investigated histologically. At the entrance to...

AbstractEndoscopic tympanoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure and may be an alternative to conventional microscopic tympanoplasty with less operative time, producing similar graft uptake. Endoscopic tympanoplasty has a major disadvantage of single handedness which is overcome by a novel concept of “Two-handed technique” using Khan’s Justtach (endoholder). The aim was to study the outcomes of two handed endoscopic tympanoplasty in terms of graft uptake and hearing outcome. Two handed endoscopic tympanoplasty was performed in 20 patients with chronic suppurative otitis media between April 2018–Ap...

ConclusionsThe macrolide antibiotics treatment has beneficial effects on lung function in non-asthmatic chronic cough patients with normal chest X-ray findings. The improvement of chronic rhinosinusitis may have some role in the lung condition. Upper respiratory tract examination and treatment may be useful for the management of chronic cough.

A 51-year-old man presented with recurrent gliosarcoma and increasing cough over the last months. On 18F-FDG PET/CT, solid lung masses with high 18F-FDG uptake were present. A biopsy taken from a lung lesion indicated distant metastases from gliosarcoma. Gliosarcoma, a rare malignant central nervous system tumor, presents with extracranial metastases in only less than 10%. As highlighted by this case, 18F-FDG PET/CT can be used for whole-body staging in patients with metastatic brain tumor. Vice versa, highly 18F-FDG–avid lung lesions in patients with brain tumors should lead to distant metastases as differential dia...

Abstract Humoral immunological defects are frequent and important causes of hypogammaglobulinemia, leading to recurrent infections, autoimmunity, allergies, and neoplasias. Usually, its onset occurs in childhood or during the second and third decades of life; however, the diagnosis is made, on average, 6 to 7 years afterwards. As a consequence, antibody defects can lead to sequelae. Here we describe the clinical-laboratory characteristics, treatment, and prognoses of patients with hypogammaglobulinemia. An observational, cross-sectional, and retrospective study of patients attending the recently established outpat...
