Viagra may be the secret to better bone marrow transplants, mouse study finds

A new study from the University of California Santa Cruz gave mice a dose of Viagra followed by an injection of another drug. It helped stem cells detach from bone marrow in just two hours.

Bone Marrow Transplantation, Published online: 21 October 2019; doi:10.1038/s41409-019-0718-7In many healthcare settings, benchmarking for complex procedures has become a mandatory requirement by competent authorities, regulators, payers and patients to assure clinical performance, cost-effectiveness and safe care of patients. In several countries inside and outside Europe, benchmarking systems have been established for haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), but access is not universal. As benchmarking is now integrated into the FACT-JACIE standards, the EBMT and JACIE established a Clinical Outcomes Group (COG) ...

Abstract Given the absence of consensus on oral feeding of patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation, the ninth workshops of practice harmonization of the Francophone Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (SFGM-TC) allocated one session to address this topic, especially during the hospitalization. A questionnaire was sent to all SFGM-TC pediatric and adult centers in order to investigate oral feeding practices. The results demonstrated a large disparity among centers regarding oral feeding. Here, we report our recommendations regarding the oral feeding after allogeneic hema...

Abstract In an effort to standardize hematopoietic stem cell allograft procedures, the Francophone bone marrow transplantation and Cell Therapy Society (SFGM-TC) organized the 9th Allograft Harmonization Practice Workshop in Lille in September 2018. The purpose of these workshops is to propose a consensual attitude to the centers that wish it. In this workshop, we discuss how to capture the cytogenetic and molecular abnormalities of acute leukaemias, myelomas, myelodysplasias, myeloproliferative syndromes and myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative syndromes in the database common to all European transplant centers cal...

Abstract Haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has been growing steadily since 2012. The SFGM-TC has twice published guidelines concerning T-cell repleted haploidentical grafts with high dose cyclophosphamide post-transplantation. The 2013 workshop recommended using the non-myeloablative Baltimore protocol with bone marrow and developed prospective protocols to evaluate these transplantations. The 2015 workshop reported improved results of reduced conditioning regimens in Hodgkin's lymphoma and intensive conditioning in myeloid hemopathies, and a similar outcome with 10/10 HLA matched donor with t...

ConclusionsFor patients in CR1, the impact of FLT3ITD is markedly modified by NPM1 status. The post-transplant outcome remains poor for patients of FLT3ITDmutNPM1wt and highlights the need for a novel approach (such as maintenance FLT3ITD inhibitor after transplant). For patients after CR1, the post-transplant outcome is very poor for patients of FLT3ITDmut and is independent of NPM1 status.Legal entity responsible for the studyThe author.FundingHas not received any funding.DisclosureThe author has declared no conflicts of interest.
