Modernizing and Clarifying the Physician Self-Referral Regulations Proposed Rule

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued aproposed rule to modernize and clarify regulations on "Stark Law," or the physician self-referral law, in support of the transition from volume to value-based care. The law prevents physicians and other healthcare providers from referring patients for healthcare services under the Medicare program if the provider, or provider's immediate family member, has a financial relationship with the entity performing the service. Changes are intended to clarify regulations and remove barriers currently preventing innovation in care coordination activities.
