The SENS Research Foundation on the Beneficial Nature of Senolytic Therapies

The SENS Research Foundation should need no introduction to this audience, but, just in case, this is one of the few non-profit organizations dedicated to advancing the state of the art in rejuvenation research and development. The focus of the SENS Research Foundation staff is on unblocking lines of research that are presently moving too slowly, rather than on reinforcing success. The co-founder, Aubrey de Grey, assembled the Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence (SENS) going on twenty years ago. It was, and is, a synthesis of what is known in the research community regarding the root causes of aging. In the SENS model, a cause of aging is a form of damage that occurs and accumulates as a result of the normal operation of cellular metabolism. Among these causes of aging is the accumulation of senescent cells, cells that should be destroyed, but linger to cause harm via their inflammatory signaling. It took more than a decade for the suggestion in the SENS proposals that senescent cells should be targeted for destruction to emerge as a well supported line of research, and that required a great deal of advocacy and bootstrapping behind the scenes. The field has advanced considerably since then, and at an accelerating pace. Thank you, for providing me with the opportunity  to respond to Dr Grant’s Letter to the Editor regarding: Preserving Pulmonary Function: A Palliative Approach published in the September 2019 issue of The Journal for Nurse Practitioner. Dr. Grant is on-target and not only following recommendations for earlier palliative interventions for cancer patients by the American Society of Oncologists (ASCO) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). Equally important to recognize is the National Quality Forum (NQF) who serve as the gold standard for patient outcome measurements in the U.S.

AbstractWe performed a prospective study to evaluate the types and characteristics of central nervous system (CNS) disorders in patients after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate the potential role of immediate (5 min) or early (15 min) acquisition in replacement of standardized 240 minutes acquisition in PD patients, but this result is not confirmed in HF patients, in which the acquisition at 240 min is confirmed as the most affordable timing for image interpretation, emphasizing the different pathophysiology that underlies these two pathologies. (University of South Florida (USF Health)) A study led by researchers at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine discovered that three major proinflammatory mediators -- interlukin-1 beta, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and thrombin -- individually and especially when combined, directly drive capillary loss known to occur in diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and malignant cancer. Using an innnovative 3-D cell model, the investigators also identified combinations of existing drugs that can block the regression of these tiny blood vessels.
