Authors: Lv X, Tang R, Gao Z, Hu D, Li G, Lang Y, He J Abstract Functional degradation of the motor cortex usually results from brain injury, stroke, limb amputation, aging or other diseases. Currently, there are no ideal means of treatment, other than medication and sports rehabilitation. The present study investigated whether electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve can activate the motor-related area of the brain. The study is based on a self-developed fully implantable nerve electrical stimulator and a self-developed multi-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) electrode array. The sciatic nerves of Sprague-Dawl...

In this study, sepsis was induced in six anaesthetized adult Border Leicester × Merino ewes via intravenous instillation of E. coli and sheep monitored according to intensive care unit standard protocols for 26 h, with the requirement for noradrenaline as the primary endpoint. Septic sheep exhibited a hyperdynamic circulation, renal dysfunction, deranged coagulation profile and severe metabolic acidosis. Sheep were assigned a severity of illness score, which increased over time. While a therapeutic effect of intravenous anti-HMGB1 antibody could not be observed in this model due to limited animal numbers, a reduced b...

Publication date: Available online 11 October 2019Source: Trends in Anaesthesia and Critical CareAuthor(s): George ChapmanAbstract“Don't worry, it's more dangerous driving here than having the anaesthetic”. This statement may be reassuring, but it isn't true. Despite its falsehood, it is often quoted as it evokes a visceral response that suggests the procedure is low risk.Communicating risks and probabilities to our patients is an everyday occurrence for clinicians - but are we correctly understood? Are we over-reliant on numerical expressions of risk? Could comparative examples of probabilities aid the underst...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential analgesic action of 8% capsaicin cream for topical use in patients with myofascial pain syndrome.MethodsInitially, cream formulations of PLA (Placebo) and CPS (Capsaicin 8%) were developed and approved according to the current requirements of the health authority agency. The 40 participating patients were randomly assigned to the PLA and CPS groups in a double-blind fashion. Before the creams were topically administered, according to the allocation group, the local anesthetic was used for a period of 50 minutes directly in the area of interest. The cream was applied...

Authors: Chen JM, Guo RR, Gao Y, Wang CX, Yuan PN Abstract OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to investigate the expressions of Fibulin-3 and Profilin-1 in vascular remodeling and the relationship between the two factors and vascular remodeling in hypertensive rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 45 spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and 15 healthy Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats were collected. The 45 SHR were randomly divided into group A, group B, and group C. Group A was injected with Profilin-1 overexpression of adenoviral vector of pAd-Profilin-1-RES-EGFP; group B was injected with recombinant Fibulin3 protein solution; and g...

I am a masters engineering student pursuing a project in the patient monitoring/anesthesiology space. I have come across the problem of tongue fallback obstructing the airway in non-GA procedures (i.e.: awake surgeries). Has anyone ever experienced this problem? How often does it happen? How critical is it? How satisfied are you with current methods to mitigate the problem? Additionally, how much time does it take to mitigate this problem? Thank you! Any and all commentary is appreciated.

I’m an anesthesiologist needing insight. I work in a few surgery centers that do ophthalmology cases. In the last few months I’ve seen a couple of cases where the paperwork from the ophthalmologist’s office has had erroneous lens information but this is only discovered after the fact. This results in the patient receiving the wrong lens which isn’t discovered by the surgeon until a post-op visit. The ASC staff did everything correctly because they provided the lens that was requested by the... Anything wrong with this attitude?

Hope the young people can learn from my mistake.... I choose a job with an AMC who had very recently bought out what most residents considered the best group in the city over two other pp groups in the same city. I was skeptical of the AMC based on all the stuff I had heard about amc jobs. However, I really liked the hospital, the clinical opportunity, and the people in the group. Rumor on the forums and amongst others I knew said this AMC wasn’t quite as bad as North Star and was one of... AMC lesson learned
