7.4 untangling the rainbow: how culture, race, religion, and ethnicity can influence sexuality and gender development

Psychology defines identity as the qualities, beliefs, personality, looks, and expressions that make a person. Gender identity forms an important part of identity, because it dictates how one views oneself both as a person and in relation to other people, ideas, and nature. Race, religion, ethnicity, and culture also can play a significant role in shaping a person ’s identity. Categorizing identity can be positive or destructive. This perspective will clarify our understanding of the term “identity.”
