10.3 potential impact of sedation practices on the developing brain

Pediatric delirium increasingly is being recognized and managed in pediatric intensive care units nationally as data of its etiologies, risk factors, impact on mortality, cognition, and development of stress disorders emerge. Delirium development and sedation practices are increasingly being recognized and associated with each other. With interfacing with the needs of critically ill children, there continues to be questions about the impact of sedation practices on the developing brain. The goal of this presentation is to discuss the limited evidence on sedation pharmacology and brain development to help frame delirium prevention and management.
