11.3 treatment decisions, consent, and disagreeing parents

Child and adolescent psychiatrists strive to establish a therapeutic alliance with parents while providing best-practice treatment recommendations for their children. Informed parental consent is fundamental to the treatment of minors. Yet, there is little guidance on what to do when parents disagree on treatment decisions. The goals of this presentation are as follows: 1) to review the clinical, ethical, and legal challenges encountered by child and adolescent psychiatrists in the face of shared decision making with contentiously disagreeing parents; and 2) to consider the options and strategies available to reach consensus and move forward with treatment.
