13.2 gender identity and non-conforming youth

The goal of this session is to provide child and adolescent psychiatrists with information and tools on how to talk about sexuality and sexual behaviors with individuals with diverse gender identities. It is important for child and adolescent psychiatrists to understand that individuals with gender dysphoria also have diverse sexual identities and that these identities can be independent of each other. This is a growing and changing population that often presents during childhood or adolescence; thus, child and adolescent psychiatrists should be comfortable evaluating and treating these individuals, which includes discussions of sexuality.
