13.4 building resilience among non-heterosexual black adolescent males in the  south

Nonheterosexual black adolescent males have increased rates of mental health issues and sexual risk, which probably are related to such unique factors as racial/sexual discrimination, internalized homophobia, and disconnection from families and social networks. These stresses are compounded in the South because of economic, educational, and health care inequalities. The situation particularly is short term in Jackson, Mississippi, because it has the highest rate of HIV among urban men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States (39.5 per 100 MSM).
