Vulnerable populations in juvenile justice

It is well-understood that certain populations are overrepresented within the juvenile justice system, such as minorities and youth suffering from mental illness. What is less often recognized is that other vulnerable populations of youth are at greater risk for contact with the juvenile justice systems and placement into correctional programs. Youth who have been exploited sexually, are transgender, or suffer from ADHD or ASD are also at greater risk for involvement with the juvenile justice system and face particular problems in receiving protection and care in correctional programs.
