19.1 fundamental first studies regarding the use of lithium in bipolar disorder

Lithium has been used for medical use since the 1840s in treatment of “brain gout.” It was first prescribed for mania in 1871 by William Hammond. It is one of the oldest psychotropic medications still used to treat patients with bipolar disorder. The purpose of this talk is to provide an overview of the use of lithium in children and adolescents with bipolar disor der, with the focus on a larger trial involving the comparison of lithium and divalproex (LvD).
