24.3 anxiety presentations in youth with asd

Current data indicate that approximately 40 percent of children and adolescents with ASD will experience an anxiety disorder, and that anxiety has a profound impact on daily functioning in children. Presentations of anxiety in ASD can vary from mild to severe, with severe presentations resulting in severe consequences such as aggression, self-injurious behaviors, school refusal, and suicidal ideation. Managing anxiety requires a thoughtful approach that considers the overlapping symptoms between anxiety and other co-occurring conditions, the developmental level of the child, the availability of specialized psychotherapy providers, and knowledge of limited psychopharmacological evidence.
