51.1 pulling and picking: body-focused repetitive behavior disorders

Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder) and skin-picking disorder (excoriation disorder) are body-focused repetitive behavior disorders (BFRBs) characterized by the recurrent, compulsive removal of hair and skin, respectively, and associated impairment/distress. They are obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders and are found in the obsessive-compulsive and related disorders category of DSM-5. These disorders tend to have an onset in early adolescence and affect females more than males.
