73.1 psychopharmacology in complex medically ill youth: what is the role of antipsychotics?

Treatment of debilitating anxiety, depression, delirium, or psychosis with psychotropic medications for symptomatic and syndromic relief during complex medical treatment may be necessary to assist medically ill children through difficult or prolonged medical treatments. Antipsychotic medications often are used by pediatric psychiatric consultation-liaison (CL) psychiatrists. Drug-drug interactions, elevated liver enzymes, pancytopenia, and cardiac arrhythmias during a developmentally sensitive period are some of the factors considered by CL psychiatrists.
