83.3 providing care for families separated at the border: experiences from an immigrant child and adolescent psychiatrist in new york city working with families in crisis

This presentation will discuss the many challenges facing child and adolescent psychiatrists, who are often immigrants themselves as they navigate taking care of immigrant patients in a world with “zero-tolerance” policies and children forcefully removed from their family. At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1) demonstrate understanding of the psychological consequences of immigration, including forced separation, detention, and deportation, on children, families, an d communities; and 2) identify how child and adolescent psychiatrists and other professionals can work together to take care of affected children and families, as they often struggle with their own identify in a polarized country.
