The role of child and adolescent psychiatrists when disaster strikes: a training course

The goals of this session are: 1) to understand the characteristics of disasters, systems of disaster response, and roles for child and adolescent psychiatrists who wish to help; 2) to comprehend how to prepare for and intervene at different phases of disaster, including early evaluation, support, referral, and treatment of distressed children using evidence-informed and -based practices; 3) to learn about opportunities for child and adolescent psychiatrists to mitigate ill effects of traumatic stress and enable resilience and recovery from disaster through community engagement; and 4) to understand the guidelines for and gain facility in public and risk communication, including the use of traditional media (print, radio, television/video) and phone- and internet-based media (text, blogs, social media).
