2.7 the role of neuropsychological testing in autoimmune brain disorders

Symptoms of mental illness, such as psychosis, confusion, and mania, are common features of autoimmune encephalopathy (AE). The presence of these symptoms may wrongly be assigned to primary mental illness, which may unintentionally delay accurate diagnosis and timely delivery of immunotherapy. Although some causes of AE present with obvious neurological symptoms (seizure, movement disorder, and so on), others present with symptoms of mental illness first. We will present data on ways that neuropsychological consultation can identify acute cognitive change and assist providers in differentiating AE from other etiologies.
