Scientific understanding of the early ontogeny of ASD has highlighted the role of an array of independent developmental liabilities that mediate inherited liability for ASD. The recognition of their neural manifestations in the presymptomatic period have potential far-reaching implications for how we understand the development of this condition, how we conduct early screening, and how we conceptualize the timing and nature of intervention.
