3.12 analysis of early psychiatric intervention in the management of n-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (nmdar) encephalitis at the children ’s hospital of philadelphia

N-Methyl-d-aspartate receptor encephalitis (NMDARE) is a rare form of autoimmune encephalitis affecting both females and males, with and without an identifiable tumor and along a wide age range, and it presents with severe neurologic and mental health manifestations. Psychotropic medications are commonly used for the management of mental health symptoms seen with this disease. Thus, psychiatrists are often consulted in NMDARE cases for assistance in the management of mental health symptoms. The use of psychotropic medications is often based on clinical judgment because of a lack of evidence regarding the best use of psychotropic medications in treating these symptoms and the relationship to the disease process.
