3.14 post-parkland: training pediatricians to identify and manage adolescent depression and ptsd following the parkland school shooting

Youth exposed to school shootings are at increased risk for developing depression and PTSD. Primary care providers (PCPs) are uniquely positioned to identify the early signs of these mental illnesses and intervene, yet they lack appropriate training. Experiential training using standardized patients has shown promise in improving PCPs ’ screening for and diagnosis of adolescent depression; however, this screening process had not previously been piloted with a population affected by school shootings.
