3.18 addressing psychiatric boarding in the emergency department: a novel program to support youth and families after emergency department discharge

The Crisis and Transition Services (CATS) program is a state-funded initiative to address high rates of youth in mental health crisis boarding in emergency departments (EDs). CATS delivers intensive “bridging” services for youth discharging from EDs, including 24-hour crisis response, in-home therapy, family peer support, care coordination, and mental health care. Since January 2018, a team has collected data to monitor outcomes, standardize the model of care, and inform best practices.
