3.56 teachers identifying children's mental illness in a task-shifting intervention in india
Twenty percent of all children suffer from a mental health condition, 80 –90 percent of whom will remain undiagnosed, untreated, and affected lifelong. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the burden of children’s mental illness is thought to be particularly large. Elementary school teachers are uniquely positioned to identify children with mental health stru ggles in LMICs. We studied the ability of LMIC teachers to identify children with mental illness after undergoing a novel 10-day training on task-shifting evidence-based children’s mental health to teachers.
