3.58 pilot study: youth suicide assessment by implicit association testing (iat) in emergency psychiatry

Suicide is the second leading cause of death of youth in North America. Suicidality is responsible for many visits to the emergency department, where timely risk assessments are crucial. Risk is typically assessed by self-report and clinical judgment. Because of impression management and other factors, our best explicit assessments remain flawed. Of interest, implication association testing (IAT) can assess implicit beliefs and attitudes related to death and dying. Preliminary findings from adult studies suggest that IAT may prove to be a robust, augmentative test of suicidality.
