The principles of paediatric anaesthesia

This article provides an overview of the practical aspects of paediatric anaesthesia, with particular emphasis on preoperative assessment and fasting guidelines, intraoperative airway and fluid management, and identification and management of those at risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Strategies for identifying and managing the anxious child are discussed as this is an increasingly challenging area for paediatric anaesthetists.
