P.87Carnitine deficiency in patients with neuromuscular diseases on long-term tube feeding

In this joint study of the National hospital organization network, carnitine deficiency in patients with neuromuscular diseases who were on long-term tube feeding was investigated. Among 98 patients, 70 patients were confirmed with hypocarnitinemia. Within 1 year of the start of tube feeding, low levels of free carnitine in serum were confirmed in six of seven patients with muscular dystrophy, two patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and three patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Of the 22 orally fed patients with muscular dystrophy, five exhibited low level of free carnitine concentration in serum.
