Authors: Fukuda H, Takekuma M, Hirashima Y Abstract A 62-year-old Japanese woman developed numbness of the extremities and megaloblastic anemia. She had undergone total abdominal hysterectomy, whole-pelvis radiation therapy and chemotherapy for gynecological cancer 10 years before. Chronic abdominal pain, diarrhea and intermittent small-bowel obstruction had afflicted her for a long time. We diagnosed her with vitamin B12 deficiency anemia and polyneuropathy due to chronic radiation enteritis causing malabsorption. Vitamin B12 injections improved her numbness and anemia. The early diagnosis and treatment of deficie...

Authors: Yıldırım G, Ertekin Pınar Ş, Gürsoy S, Özdemir Kol I Abstract OBJECTIVES: To determine the views of patients hospitalized in the algology clinic about ethical issues related to pain. METHODS: A total of 135 patients admitted to the algology clinic comprised the population of this descriptive study. Data were collected using the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the questionnaire on ethical issues related to pain. To evaluate the data, percentage distribution and the Tukey test of variance were used. RESULTS: Of the patients, 92.6% believed that they had the right to pain relief, and 94...

CONCLUSION: Abdominal pain in pancreatic cancer is the most common symptom that negatively affects the quality of life. A good analgesia improves the survival, while pain decreases the survival. The results of the present study demonstrated that the survival of the patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer who received effective pain therapy in the algology clinic may be longer. During my nine years in the NFL, I ruptured tendons in my fingers, suffered multiple concussions, and broke several bones. I tore my ACL, MCL, and PCL, and completely blew out my left knee. That last injury should have ended my career. But it didn’t. I put myself back together and played through the pain. What finally took me down? A tiny bug I had never heard of and couldn’t see. A drug-resistant staph infection called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus cost me my NFL career—and almost my life. MRSA is one of many deadly, antibiotic-resistant infections. Together, these “superbugs” k...

Endogenous opioid peptides and exogenous opioids modulate immune function, and animal and human studies have shown that some have a depressant immunomodulatory effect. This is potentially of high clinical significance, eg, in cancer patients and surgery. The primary objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the effect of morphine and oxycodone on immune pathways associated with immunosuppression in gynecological laparotomy patients. Gene expression was analyzed in CD4+, CD8+, and natural killer (NK) cells using the 3′ Affymetrix microarray. Patients were randomized to receive morphine, oxycodone, or nonopioid &ld...

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a serious adverse side effect of cancer treatment with no Food and Drug Administration-approved medication for its prevention or management. Using RNA sequencing analysis of dorsal root ganglia (DRG), we identify critical contributions of histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) and mitochondrial damage to the establishment of CIPN in a mouse model of cisplatin-induced neuropathy. We show that pharmacological inhibition of HDAC6 using ACY-1215 or global deletion of HDAC6 is sufficient to prevent cisplatin-induced mechanical allodynia, loss of intraepidermal nerve fibers (IENFs), an...

Abdominal pain is common and is associated with high disease burden and health care costs in pediatric acute recurrent and chronic pancreatitis (ARP/CP). Despite the strong central component of pain in ARP/CP and the efficacy of psychological therapies for other centralized pain syndromes, no studies have evaluated psychological pain interventions in children with ARP/CP. The current trial seeks to 1) evaluate the efficacy of a psychological pain intervention for pediatric ARP/CP, and 2) examine baseline patient-specific genetic, clinical, and psychosocial characteristics that may predict or moderate treatment response.

This article represents the findings from the queries over the first three months ’ queries and brings further clarity to our initial findings. Methods This quality improvement (QI) project was reviewed and approved by the Orlando Health/UFHealth Cancer Center Joint Oncology Committee for 2018-19. We began recording results of all E-FORSCE queries occurring after the law ’s implementation of July 1, 2018 through September 30, 2018. We informed each patient that the PDMP query had become mandatory in Florida, and we discussed the results of each query with each patient. Each query examined the last 12 months of t...
