Cancer survivorship: living with and beyond cancer

Cancer survivorship is becoming an increasingly important part of a cancer patient's journey. Here the author discusses how it should now be recognised as part of the overall cancer care package, with the aim of supporting patients' health and wellbeing beyond chemotherapy.

The largest trial ever conducted into the disease found that giving chemotherapy halves the risk of the cancer coming back after surgery. The results provide clear evidence for this approach to become the new standard of care for patients whose disease has not spread to other parts of the body.

Conclusions: The incidence of BM among patients with gynecologic malignancies is rare and associated with poor survival. For select patients, SRS may be associated with prolonged survival.

Conclusions: After controlling for referral patterns, administration of AC provided no definitive survival benefit. Future studies may elucidate the elderly population who may benefit from AC.

EGFR activation induces cell proliferation, neoformation of blood vessels, survival, and metastasis of the cancer cells. Nimotuzumab is an engineered, intermediate affinity anti-EGFR antibody, that apart from other drugs in its class, is very safe and does not cause hypomagnesemia or grade 3–4 cutaneous rash. The antibody inhibits cell proliferation and angiogenesis, activates natural killer cells, stimulates dendritic cell maturation, and induces cytotoxic T cells. Nimotuzumab restores MHC-I expression on tumor cells, hindering one of the EGFR immune-escape ways. The antibody has been extensively studied in 7 clinic...

Conclusion: Our patient, diagnosed with recurrent prostate BCC after receiving a radical prostatectomy, responded to treatment with etoposide. Radical prostatectomy and radiotherapy should remain first-line therapy; however, etoposide may be an alternative second-line therapy when other options are not available. Consensus regarding treatment plans, and the molecular mechanisms behind prostate BBC, must be elucidated.

roli Oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neurotoxicity (OIPN) is a severe and potentially permanent side effect of cancer treatment affecting the majority of oxaliplatin-treated patients, mostly with the onset of acute symptoms, but also with the establishment of a chronic sensory loss that is supposed to be due to dorsal root ganglia neuron damage. The pathogenesis of acute as well as chronic OIPN is still not completely known, and this is a limitation in the identification of effective strategies to prevent or limit their occurrence. Despite intense investigation at the preclinical and clinical levels, no treatment can be...

In this study we investigated the regulatory role of Obg-like ATPase 1 which is involved in multiple uses of drug resistance against breast cancer. Paclitaxel resistant cell line (MCF-7-PTR) was developed by a continuous increasing paclitaxel concentration. MTT assay was used to validate either acquired resistant or OLA1 modified cell lines. qRT-PCR, western blotting, apoptosis, and cell cycle assays were executed to evaluate gene and protein expression in cell lines. A series of in vitro assays was performed in the cells with RNAi-mediated knockdown to expound the regulatory function of OLA1 in breast cancer. We demonstra...

We examined and screened 626 studies according to specific criteria and ultimately included seven studies that were relevant to the indicated topic. Among them, three studies reported the incidence of death during 6- and 12-month follow-up periods. Six of the seven included studies showed possible positive results, suggesting that enalapril plays a cardioprotective role, while five of these studies showed that there was a significant difference in the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) between an enalapril group and a control group (weighted mean difference (WMD) = 7.18, 95% CI: 2.49–11.87, I2 = 96%, P
