Mucosal impedance testing: A new diagnostic testing in gastroesophageal reflux disease.

In conclusion, endoscopic MIT measurement can differentiate esophageal disorders instantly during endoscopy. It may not only serve as an important tool in diagnosing of GERD but also help guide therapy in clinically difficult situations as a surrogate to predict the treatment response. Authors: Petcu A, Ghib LJ, Grad SM, Popovici C, Rogojan L, Rednic NV, Rednic S Abstract Gastrointestinal tract involvement is the most common visceral affectation in systemic sclerosis (SSc), but the manifestations may vary in extension and severity. Endoscopic and histopathological gastroesophageal findings were investigated in patients with SSc. A total of 79 consecutive patients with definite SSc were enrolled in a cross sectional study. Clinical data were collected, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and biopsies from gastric mucosa were performed in all cases. Fifty-seven (72.1%) out of 79 SSc patients had gastr...

AbstractBackgroundThe purpose of this study was to determine whether magnetic sphincter augmentation (MSA) could effectively treat patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) who suffer primarily fromatypical symptoms due to laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). MSA has been shown to treattypical symptoms of GERD with good success, but its effect onatypical symptoms is unknown.MethodsA retrospective review of a prospectively maintained institutional review board-approved database was conducted for all patients who underwent MSA between January 2015 and December 2018. All patients had objective confirmation of GERD from ...

This study examined outcomes, surgical complications, and revisions in patients treated with laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication for hiatal hernia and substantial gastroesophageal reflux disease. In total, 85 consecutive patients who underwent hernia repair with MIROMESH Biologic Matrix, a novel hepatic-derived surgical mesh served as subjects. Subjects were contacted by phone, consented, and participated in an Institutional Review Board-approved structured phone interview. Responses were acquired from 73 of the 85 patients. The gastroesophageal reflux disease health–related quality of life showed significant improvem...

We present two cases of patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and who were subsequently diagnosed with gastric twisting. Both cases required conversion to laparoscopic gastric bypass. Accompanying symptoms may vary but they commonly include early satiety, epigastric pain associated with food intake, gastroesophageal reflux and early vomiting. Although diagnose is mainly clinical, it requires high suspicion since endoscopy and gastrointestinal studies are not conclusive. The principal therapeutic options are endoscopic dilatations, serotomy and conversion to gastric bypass. PMID: 31755282 [PubMed - as s...

Conclusion: In cases of ISS where GERD is a potential causative factor, resection by endoscopy may be the treatment of choice. Once GERD is effectively treated and if symptoms are still present, one should consider tracheal resection.

Background: Activation of afferent nerves in the esophagus is assumedly a major mechanisms of cough associated with GER, which may lead to sensitization of cough reflex. Transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV) 1 is one of the nociceptors activated by acid, whose expression is increased in the airways of chronic cough patients (Groneberg 2004) and in the esophagus of GER patients (Guarino 2010). The expression of nociceptors in the esophagus of patients with GER-associated cough is unknown.Method: We prospectively recruited untreated GER patients with (n=32, C+) and without (n=5, C-) cough. Esophageal endoscopy was pe...

ConclusionIn cases that are initially AB negative and CDX-2 positive, CDX-2 was demonstrated to have a potential prognostic utility for early detection of progression to BE. CDX-2 expression is significantly predictive for risk of goblet cell IM development 40 to 45  months after initial biopsy.

ConclusionThe consumption of high-fat, low-protein, high-sugar, acid foods, and beverages is associated with a higher number of proximal reflux episodes at the MII-pH, according to the global refluxogenic score of LPR patients.

Authors: Wang YJ, Lang XQ, Wu D, He YQ, Lan CH, Xiao X, Wang B, Zou DW, Wu JM, Zhao YB, Dettmar PW, Chen DF, Yang M Abstract Background/Aims: To determine the value of salivary pepsin in discriminating sub-types of gastroesophageal refluxdisease (GERD) and GERD-related disorders. Methods: Overall, 322 patients with different sub-types of GERD and 45 healthy controls (HC) werestudied. All patients took Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Questionnaire (GerdQ) andunderwent endoscopy and 24-hour esophageal pH monitoring and manometry. Salivary pepsinconcentration (SPC) was detected by using colloidal gold double-antib...
