AbstractObjectivesWe aimed to test our hypothesis that additional administration of traditional Japanese (Kampo) medicine, kakkonto (kakkon-to: KT) and shosaikotokakikyosekko (sho-saiko-to-ka-kikyo-sekko: SSKKS), is more effective in relieving symptoms and preventing the onset of severe infection in mild-to-moderate COVID-19 patients compared to those treated only with conventional treatment.Trial designThe study is designed as a multi-center, interventional, parallel-group, randomized (1:1 ratio), investigator-sponsored, two-arm study.ParticipantsPatients and inpatients will be recruited from 8 Japanese academic and non-a...

Children get sick; it’s part of life. They catch colds, they get fevers, they throw up and get diarrhea. Most of the time, it’s nothing at all. But this year, as we struggle through the COVID-19 pandemic, every sniffle will be complicated. The problem is, the symptoms of COVID-19 can be not just mild, but similar to the symptoms of all the common illnesses kids get all the time. Symptoms can include fever, even a mild one cough (that you don’t have another clear reason for) breathing difficulty sore throat or runny nose (that you don’t have another clear reason for) loss of taste or smell headache ...

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) surveillance, in Brazil, initiated shortly after its description, in China. Our aim was to detect severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and additional pathogens in samples from the initial phase of the outbreak in Brazil, from late February to late March. From 707 samples analysed, 29 (4.1%) were SARS-CoV-2 positive. Fever and cough were their most prevalent symptoms. Co-detection of rhinovirus was observed in 2 (6.9%) cases. Additional pathogens were identified in 66.1% of the SARS-CoV-2 negative cases, mainly rhinovirus and influenza A(H1N1)pdm0...

CONCLUSIONS: YHPG has significant antiviral effects in IFV-infected mice, partially by inhibiting influenza virus replication and regulating the occurrence of apoptosis induced by influenza virus infection, suggesting that YHPG may be a promising antiviral agent with potential clinical application prospects. This study revealed that seasonal influenza circulates with co-morbidities in pregnant women in Lagos. This may exacerbate their immunosuppressed state and lead to complication in pregnancy. Apt treatment of influenza-like illness should be considered in such women. Furthermore, there is need for enhanced surveillance including monitoring of the potential transmissibility of influenza to the foetus and newborns. We therefore recommend sturdy advocacy on preventing exposure to influenza virus, its optimal early diagnosis, vaccination and disease management in pregnancy. PMID: 32920577 [PubMed - in process]
