Commentary: Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Esophagus —Rare but With Typical Characteristics

Solitary fibrous tumors typically arise from the pleura, but can originate from soft tissue in any other extrapleural locations. They can present in a sessile or pedunculated form with either benign or malignant pathologic features. Their histopathologic characteristics are similar regardless of the location and the diagnosis is typically made postoperatively on the resected specimen. The large size and sessile presentation can carry higher risk of malignancy.1 Solitary fibrous tumors share similarities with hemangiopericytomas and can present with NGFI-A-binding protein 2 (NAB2) —signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) fusion gene.
