This study reports the molecular characterisation of a GaHV-2 strain detected in a flock of Italian meat-type turkeys exhibiting visceral lymphomas. Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of the meq gene revealed that the turkey GaHV-2 has molecular features of high virulence and genetic similarity with GaHV-2 strains recently detected in Italian commercial and backyard chickens. This study reports virological and epidemiological data accumulated through passive surveillance conducted during 1,825 herd visits from 2011 to 2018. Among them, 887 (48.6%) tested swIAV-positive. The proportion of positive cases remained stable year-on-year and year-round. In this study, its safety and immunization efficacy were evaluated. Its lentogenic characteristic was stable for 25 generations in embryonated chicken eggs and for six generations in SPF chickens. Overdosed administration did not cause any clinical signs or pathogenic changes in chickens. As to its immunization effect, rmNA-1 stimulated a comparable serum NDV specific antibody level to a LaSota (genotype II) strain based commercial vaccine, and provided full protection against virulent genotype VII strain challenge, with significantly reduced virus shedding period.

Abstract The occurrence of severe outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Korea led to establishment of a national antigen bank for emergency preparedness.
