He was ‘perfectly healthy’ before the mosquito bite. Nine days later, he was brain dead.
The Michigan man reportedly contracted Eastern equine encephalitis, or "sleeping sickness," a rare, mosquito-borne virus.

Authors: Jang Y, Kim DW, Yang KI, Byun JI, Seo JG, No YJ, Kang KW, Kim D, Kim KT, Cho YW, Lee ST, Drug Committee of Korean Epilepsy Society Abstract Autoimmune epilepsy is a newly emerging area of epilepsy. The concept of "autoimmune" as an etiology has recently been revisited thanks to advances in autoimmune encephalitis and precision medicine with immunotherapies. Autoimmune epilepsy presents with specific clinical manifestations, and various diagnostic approaches including cerebrospinal fluid analysis, neuroimaging, and autoantibody tests are essential for its differential diagnosis. The diagnosis is o...

da HR Abstract The Northeast of Brazil has experienced a triple epidemic, with the simultaneous circulation of dengue virus (DENV), chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Zika virus (ZIKV), which may have contributed to the observed increase across this region of atypical forms of disease and deaths. In view of this fact, non-congenital neurological disorders related to arboviruses were compared with other etiologies, mortality and survival rates of patients admitted to referral neurology hospitals in Pernambuco State, Northeast Brazil, from 2015 to 2018. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples were collected and tested usin...
Anti-NMDA receptor (NMDAR) encephalitis is characterized by mood and behavior changes, seizures, abnormal movements, autonomic instability, and encephalopathy. It occurs most commonly in young adults. A paraneoplastic association has been made with ovarian teratoma, though this is rare in children1. More recently, cases of anti-NMDAR encephalitis following viral infections have been reported, including herpes simplex virus (HSV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), and now the 2019 novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2)2-5.
We present a case of LGI1 encephalitis only partially responsive to immunotherapy with eventual complete resolution after resection of a squamous cell lung carcinoma.
Discussion Dengue is an important arboviral infection that affects about 40% of the world population. It is found mainly in topical and subtropical areas of the world mainly in developing countries but it range is spreading including the United States. A review of common arboviruses can be found here. It is a flaviavirus with 4 distinct serotypes named DENV-1 through DENV-4 and is spread by A. aegypti a day biting mosquito. Infection with one serotype confers immunity to that serotype but not the others. It does offer some protection for cross-infection but this only lasts a few months. Incubation period is 3-14 days with ...
ConclusionsIn this paper we discuss the current state of the results and draw on evidences from malaria, dengue and other vector-borne diseases to illustrate the state of current thinking and outline the need for further research to inform our predictions and response.
Conclusions/SignificanceThe results show a modest increase inCxcl9 andCxcl11 transcripts in the brain and the emergence of sleep/wake cycle fragmentation in the initial encephalitic stage, followed by increases inIfn-γ and IFN-dependent chemokine transcripts in the brain and of CXCL10 in the cerebrospinal fluid. The latter parameter and sleep/wake alterations could provide combined humoral and functional biomarkers of the early encephalitic stage in African trypanosomiasis.
