9th Human Case Of Mosquito-Borne EEE Reported In Massachusetts

BOSTON (CBS) – A ninth human case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis was announced by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Wednesday. A man in his 70’s from Essex County has been diagnosed with the mosquito-borne virus. The town of Manchester-by-the-Sea later posted on its website that a resident had EEE. “The person identified works in the communities of Ipswich, Boxford, Topsfield, Essex, Gloucester and Manchester so they are not able to identify where the person was exposed. At this time the risk level for Manchester will be raised to Moderate and may rise to High. There are no plans to spray,” the town’s board of health said in its statement. EEE risk levels in Ipswich and Topsfield were raised to high Wednesday. Risk levels have been raised to moderate in Beverly, Danvers Hamilton, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Middleton, Newbury, Newburyport and Wenham. Check: Map Of Communities At Risk There are 35 communities now at critical risk, 40 at high risk, and 128 at moderate risk for the EEE virus in Massachusetts. Health officials urged the public to use bug spray, reduce exposed skin and stay indoors from dusk to dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
