A multicenter study of primary liver transplantation for biliary atresia in Japan

ConclusionNon-KP initial procedures were limited. Clear criteria regarding the timing of diagnosis or patient condition could not be determined. Reasons for not initially selecting KP varied, but late diagnosis was predominant. Further study is needed to create guidelines for the initial treatment of BA patients.

auml; M Abstract Inferior vena cava atresia (IVCA) is a rare vascular condition that may be treated by venous stenting. The authors report on the microsurgical removal of an intraspinally misplaced stent causing nerve root compression and neurological deficits.A 42-year-old patient with IVCA and painful cutaneous collaterals had been scheduled for treatment by stenting of the iliocaval confluence and associated venous collaterals. Initial stenting of the right iliac vein was successful; however, during recanalization of the left paravertebral plexus, the stent entered the spinal canal via extraspinal-to-intraspina...

ConclusionsPreoperative examination of the perineum and imaging with accurate interpretation is crucial to identify subtle but important distinctions in diagnosis, which can result in markedly different interventions ranging from transperineal resection of a transverse vaginal septum, vaginal pull-through procedure, to hysterectomy. The location of the gynecologic outflow obstruction dictates the proper surgical treatment of these patients.

Conclusion: Patients with UCHL experience improved spatial hearing with the higher presentation level, suggesting that the auditory deprivation associated with a moderate-to-severe UCHL does not preclude exposure to—or use of—binaural difference cues.

AbstractOperative repair of complex conditions such as esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) is technically demanding, but few training opportunities exist outside the operating theater for surgeons to attain these skills. Learning them during surgery on actual neonates where the stakes are high, margins for error narrow, and where outcomes are influenced by technical expertise, is problematic. There is an increasing demand for high-fidelity simulation that can objectively measure performance. We developed such a simulator to measure force and motion reliably, allowing quantitative feedback of technical...

Authors: Lima M, Di Salvo N, Cordola C, D'Antonio S, Libri M, Maffi M, Gargano T, Ruggeri G, Catania VD Abstract Introduction: Surgical management of jejuno-ileal atresia/stenosis (JIA) is shifting to a minimally invasive approach. Our purpose is to evaluate the safety and feasibility of laparoscopy-assisted surgery (LAS) in JIA by comparing outcomes with a control group of open surgery (OS).Methods: A retrospective review of JIA cases was performed. Demographic, surgical, and outcomes data were extracted. LAS cases were compared with OS. Fisher's exact-test for qualitative and Mann-Whitney-test for quantitative va...

We report our experience of staged operations in the surgical treatment of complex jejuno-ileal atresia. Our study examined transgastric deflation of the proximal segment and feeding jejunostomy through the distal segment as a first stage followed by a definitive restoration of continuity secondarily at a tertiary centre over a period of three years. A cohort of 21 cases were studied. None suffered with intestinal perforation or volvulus. Tube plugging was seen in three patients who were relieved by flushing. Tube replacement was not required. One patient developed necrotising enterocolitis and died. Sepsis was seen in thr...
