Modulators of platelet function in aging.

Modulators of platelet function in aging. Platelets. 2019 Sep 16;:1-9 Authors: Iyer KS, Dayal S Abstract Platelets are small, anucleated effector cells that play an important role in linking the hemostatic and inflammatory processes in the body. Platelet function is known to be altered under various inflammatory conditions including aging. A gain in platelet function during aging can increase the risk of thrombotic events, such as stroke and acute myocardial infarction. Anti-platelet therapy is designed to reduce risk of serious cerebrovascular and cardiovascular events, but the adverse consequences of therapy, such as risk for bleeding increases with aging as well. Age-associated comorbidities such as obesity, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia also contribute to increased platelet activity and thus can enhance the risk of thrombosis. Therefore, identification of unique mechanisms of platelet dysfunction in aging and in age-associated comorbidities is warranted to design novel antiplatelet drugs. This review outlines some of the current areas of research on aging-related mechanisms of platelet hyperactivity and addresses the clinical urgency for designing anti-platelet therapies toward novel molecular targets in the aging population. Micro displacement amplification mechanisms are gaining importance in MEMS applications where motion precision, reliability, accuracy, and compactness are needed. These displacement amplification mechanisms improve the sensitivity of micro-sensors and voltage stroke ratio of micro actuators. There advantages have opened doors for new and improved micro devices with unpre...

Hernández BattezAbstractTribological behavior of three Fatty Acid anion-based Ionic Liquids (FAILs) with the same ammonium cation ([N8881]) and different anions ([C16:0], [C12:0] and [C8:0]) were studied. Four different tribopairs (steel-steel, aluminum-steel, bronze-steel and tungsten carbide-steel) were tested for each FAIL using a ball-on-disc reciprocating test for 30 min (room temperature, 50 N-load, 4 mm of str...

ConclusionsThe overall VTE rate after CABG has been low. However, the condition has been associated with worse 30-day postoperative outcomes and complications. The independent predictors of VTE development included a history of bleeding disorders, congestive heart failure in the 30 days before surgery, and operative time of ≥310 minutes. Understanding these risk factors should aid physicians in the decisions regarding prophylaxis and treatment.

However, IVC filters have been associated with risks, including IVC perforation, filter migration, fracture, and thrombosis. Filter retrieval has not always been successful. Our objective was to identify the factors associated with failure of retrieval of IVC filters.Meth...

AbstractA false-positive result of syphilis screening test (FPST) is a characteristic finding in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We evaluated the clinical characteristics of SLE patients with FPST at SLE diagnosis. We reviewed the medical records of patients with SLE who underwent the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory or Rapid Plasma Reagin tests at SLE diagnosis at Severance Hospital between 2006 and 2016. The baseline characteristics and clinical outcomes were compared between patients with FPST and those with a negative result of syphilis screening test. Of 145 patients with SLE, 20 patients showed ...
