Phase 3 trial results: efficacy and safety of elagolix in a subset of women with uterine fibroids and adenomyosis

Adenomyosis is a benign lesion within the myometrium associated with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) and dysmenorrhea, and commonly co-exists with uterine fibroids (UF). Adenomyosis is also present in 15-57% of hysterectomy specimens with leiomyoma (Genc M, et al, 2015; Taran FA, et al, 2010). This analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of elagolix, an oral, gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor antagonist, with add-back therapy in a subset of women with UF, HMB and co-existing adenomyosis.
